About this course

Anatomic Pathology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the study of tissue samples to reach a diagnosis. Samples which are studied may include surgically removed organs, biopsy specimens, bodily fluids, and in some cases the whole body (autopsy). Pathology plays a crucial role in forensic investigations by providing expert assessment of the cause and manner of death.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the most important conditions that affect every organ system in the human body, providing an in-depth look at the pathophysiology and progression of disease. These in-depth lectures include how the cell adapts to injury, necrosis (death of living cells or tissues), inflammation, wound healing, and neoplasia (abnormal new growth of cells). Genetic studies and gene markers used in the assessment of various diseases are discussed.

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine form the basis of modern scientific medical knowledge. To adequately diagnose and manage a particular illness, a competent physician must have a good understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease as well as the best laboratory tests needed for its diagnosis and management. This course helps fulfill that requirement.

For optimal comprehension, the student should be familiar with the concepts of human anatomy and physiology.
